Top 10 Churches to Attend in Beijing

Beijing has the highest number of Christian denominations of any city in Chinese mainland. It hosts famous cathedrals and inter-denomination church gatherings, which welcome tourists from all over the world. Below are some recommended churches to attend while on a Beijing tour.

1. Beijing International Christian Fellowship (BICF)

This is the largest inter-denomination church in Beijing. It conducts numerous services in about 8 languages including English. Only foreign passport holders are allowed to attend services.

How to get there

40 Liangmaqiao Road is only 10 minutes' walk from Liangmaqiao Station on Metro Line 10. Take exit B and walk to east.

2. Beijing Baptist Church

This international church welcomes people from all around the world. Services are conducted in English.

How to get there

It meets in the Great Hotel, at the northeast corner of Chaoyang Dangxiao Jie and Jing’an Dong Jie, 800 meters south of Sanyuanqiao Exit D, on Subway Line 10 .

Services

  • Sunday, 9.45am: Coffee, tea and fellowship

3. All Nations International Fellowship (ANIF)

This charismatic church was started by a group of expats (including from US, U.K and Australia) in 2011. It welcomes English speaking tourists from all around the world. Tourists can expect western-style prayer and worship sessions.

How to get there

The church is located on the fifth floor of the Wangjing SOHO complex (the biggest building in Wangjing district).

From Wangjing Station on lines 15 and 14, use Exit A, walk 200 meters towards the intersection. Futong West Street is 600 meters on your right. Poly Cinema is just 600 meters walk down Futong West Street, and the complex is on your right.

Alternatively, take buses 538 and 536 to Rongke Ganlan Cheng station.

4. Chongwenmen Church (Ashbury Methodist)

Built in 1870, it became the first American Methodist church to be set up in Beijing. Services are conducted in Chinese language but with English translation.

How to get there

Chongwenmen Church address is 4 Chongwenmen Neidajie, Dongcheng District and is located near the Chongwenmen subway station.

5. Gangwashi Presbyterian Church

This church has a follower-ship of over 6,000 people since its reopening in 1980. It was built in the 1860s. Gangwashi Presbyterian Church is located in Xisi and is a good place for tourists because of its architectural beauty. It also hosts a library where people can relax and do some study.

Not only is it a great place to worship (world-class music), meditate and pray, visitors can also take pictures after service, and enjoy family interactive gatherings.

How to get there

From exit D of Xisi Subway Station on Metro Line 4, walk south for about 10 minutes.

  • 3rd mass: 10.00-11.30am.

6. The River of Grace Church

This church allows only foreign passport holders to attend services. It begun in 2000 and emphasizes relationships, compassion, and service. 

How to get there

It is located on the second floor of Yuan Art Museum and thus visitors can enjoy viewing artifacts after the service.

The building on Wangjing West Second Road is near Guangshunbei Dajie and Wangjingbeilun stations. It is only 700 meters (5-10 minutes walk) right of Wangjing Bei Lu station. Take buses 404 and 416.

7. Beijing Protestant Church

This church was established in 1925 by the American Protestant Church. It is a two-story traditional Western-style church building. Only passport holders are allowed to attend services.

How to get there

It is at the former Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) headquarters, 181 Dongdanbei Street.

8. Wangfujing Catholic Church

Originally named Saint Joseph's Church, it is described as the most conspicuous cathedral in Beijing. It has a number of cultural and unique features especially after recent restoration.

The church has many historic religious paintings done by Giuseppe Castiglione.

How to get there

Wangfujing Church is on Wangfujing Street - a famous paradise among shoppers.

Alight at the Wangfujing station on Subway Line 1, walk along the street for 10 minutes, and then turn left. From Donganmen Shichang Station, walk 300 meters north. Buses 104, 803, 814 and 808 can also take you to Donganmen Shichang.

9. Church of the Savior

Church of the Savior Church of the Savior

This catholic church was originally established by Jesuits in 1703 and has a Gothic style and grey marble facade. The ground is surrounded by pine and oak trees as well as two Chinese pavilions.

Getting there

In 1887 it was rebuilt at its current location, near the Forbidden City. Take bus 103, 101 or 109 to Xianmen Station.

Masses

  • Monday to Saturday: 6–7am 
  • Sunday: 6, 7, 8, and 10 a.m., and 6 p.m.

10. The Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos Church of Beijing

It is the only Orthodox church in the China's capital. It welcomes nationals from all countries. Tourists can choose to visit the History Museum of the Russian Spiritual Mission in China after service.

Address

The church is hosted in a Russian Federation at 4 Dongzhimenbei Zhongjie.

  • Sunday Mass (Divine Liturgy): 9.30 a.m.
  • Confession: 8 to 9.20 a.m.
  • Saturday: All-Night Vigil: 5 p.m.
