Nanjing Lukou International Airport is 36 kilometers (22 miles) from the center of Nanjing as the crow flies. It is a modern airport with advanced equipment and complete supporting facilities. Its airfield clearance zone is also in good condition. Ground transportation around the airport is quite convenient. There is a 29-kilometer Airport expressway from the city center to the airport. This expressway connects with the Nanjing-Shanghai Expressway, the Nanjing-Hangzhou Expressway, the Nanjing-Nantong Expressway, the Nanjing-Dalian Expressway and the Nanjing-Ma’anshan Expressway.

At present, there are about 120 flight routes from Nanjing, including flights to 42 major Chinese cities and 2 Special Administrative Regions, and to 19 international cities. The international passenger air routes include regular direct passenger flights connecting Nanjing with Singapore, Seoul, Osaka, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Macau; regular indirect international flights (transferring at Beijing) to Los Angeles, Frankfurt, London, Moscow and Vancouver; and nonscheduled chartered airlines connecting Nanjing with Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, Sabah and other places.

The international cargo air routes include regular international cargo flights connecting Nanjing with Los Angeles, Chicago, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Seoul, Singapore, Moscow, Malmo and other places. There are Special Administrative Region cargo flights to Hong Kong and a Nanjing-Macau-Taipei route. Non-scheduled chartered flights carry cargo to Dhaka, Liege and other places.

Transportation To/From the Airport

China Gate (Zhonghua Men) Long Distance Bus Station is near China Gate Subway Station. Passengers can also take buses numbered 2, 38, 16, 39, 49, 111 and 116 to get to West Street Bus Station or Ruitai Market station. Shuttle buses depart from 06:00 to 20:30 every half an hour.

Nanjing Railway Station East Square Bus Station (221 Longpan Middle Road, northwest of Jinrunfa Market) services the airport via Ruijin Road. It can be reached by city buses numbered 17, 36, 44, 59, 71, 97, 141 and 309; train, subway or other long distance buses. For Ruijin Road take buses numbered 40, 47 or 58, or take buses numbered 27, 34, 37, 49 or 306 to Park Road or Changfu Street, then walk to the Ruijin Road bus stop.

Buses depart from the Nanjing Railway Station bus station from 06:00 to 20:30 every half an hour. It takes about one hour from the railway station to the airport. If it stops at Ruijin Road, the bus will be 10 or 15 minutes late.

Since October 15, 2009, a new shuttle bus from Hanzhong Gate Long Distance Bus Station to the airport has been operating. The service is tentatively scheduled for every hour. The first bus departs at 06:00 and the last one departs at 21:00; 16 buses per day. The buses departing at 06:00 and 09:00 stop at China Gate Long Distance Bus Terminal and the other 14 buses are direct to the airport.

It takes about one hour from Hanzhong Gate Long Distance Bus Terminal to the airport. The newly-built Hanzhong bus terminal is located in the center of Nanjing. Xinjiekou is to its east and Hexi is to its west. Buses numbered 5, 9, 18, 29, 68, 21, 23, 75, 82, 78, 152 and 134 stop there. Access by public transport is very convenient.

History of the Nanjing Airport

Nanjing Lukou International Airport was officially completed on February 28, 1995. On July 1, 1997, the day of Hong Kong returning to Chinese governance, Nanjing Lukou International Airport was officially opened to air traffic.

On November 18, 1997, as approved by the State Council, Nanjing Lukou International Airport was allowed to receive foreign planes.

Nanjing Lukou International Airport is one of the important trunk airports in China. It is also the major cargo airport of the East China Region. Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Pudong Airport are its alternative airports. It is also the alternative airport for those two airports.

The airport’s development plan is as follows, the number of flights should reach 360,000 per year, the passenger handling capacity should reach 40 million per year and the cargo handling capacity should grow to one million tons. Under this development plan, development will be implemented in phases.

At present, the number of flights per year is 69,800 with a peak record of 5,555 passengers entering or leaving in one hour. The passenger handling capacity is 12 million per year and the cargo handling capacity amounts to 400,000 tons per year.

There is a runway of 3,600 meters (12,000 feet) long and 60 meters (200 feet) wide and a taxiway of 3,600 meters long and 45 meters (150 feet) wide, equipped with the required lighting.? The airstrip is designed and constructed according to the 4E standard. The terminal building occupies an area of 132,000 square meters (1,420,000 square feet), with arriving and departing passengers separated.

The cargo warehouse covers 41,000 square meters (440,000 square feet) and the goods shed occupies 1,800 square meters (19,000 square feet). The cargo handling center, with an area of 20,000 square meters (220,000 square feet), has the capability to handle special goods. The airfield takes up 447,000 square meters (4,810,000 square feet) of which 47,000 square meters (510,000) is for cargo planes.
