 Shanghai Natural Wild Insect Kingdom

Shanghai Natural Wild Insect Kingdom

Written by CindyUpdated Feb. 1, 2021

Shanghai Natural Wild Insect Kingdom is a vast insect museum located beside the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. In the museum, living insects are mainly introduced from Southeast Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia, and living reptiles from South American countries like Brazil. The species of reptiles are very peculiar, some of which are more than 10 kilograms in weight.

The living insect house vividly simulates the living environments of insects, such as a garden, a field, woods, a river valley, a desert, a moor and a rainforest. It consists of the Butterfly Valley, the Insect Gallery, the Ecological Stocking Area, the Karst Cave Area of Reptiles and Amphibians, the Water Touching Area, the Experience Area of the Rainforest, the Small Insect Theater and the Insect Classroom. Shows are also full of variety: Getting Honey, the Grand Insect Parade and Grab What Insects Can.

The Butterfly House introduces you to a sea of butterflies; hundreds of different kinds of butterflies in all shapes and colors flutter around you.

The Karst Cave Area of Reptiles and Amphibians uses high-tech means to restore the breeding environment of a rainforest and lake for thousands of living animals, such as lizards, chameleons and tree frogs.

What's more, colored silkworms are very eye-catching. Colored ones live in exactly the same way and grow in the same shape as ordinary ones; the only difference is their body color. Ordinary silkworms are white and spin crystal silk, while colored ones are red, yellow, purple and other colors, and the silk they produce also has different colors. Colored silkworms are not fed by mulberry leaves but by a specially made synthetic fodder. When silkworm babies are incubated from silkworm eggs, they are fed altogether by a kind of unified synthetic fodder; when they grow up a little, they will be divided into different groups and fed by the same color fodder according to their body colors, which is the color they mostly absorb, and then these silkworms will finally grow into colored bodies and cocoon in different colors.
